I’ve long been interested in the connection between music and language, but this lovely new book by artist and writer Peter Selgin fascinated me, as it links events from his study of, and life in the visual arts, with his impressive collection of work as an equally impressive and accomplished writer.
The stories accompanying each stylistically diverse painting are thoroughly engaging, frank, deeply personal, often humorous, and always illuminating—both explicitly and implicitly—about the relationship between the visual and literary arts, as well as the relationship artists in all media have with their work.
Painting Stories is a treat for the mind and senses and creative spirit. Highly recommended.
