Blossom Whine

Published by

What grand intelligence is this
that sends its tiny armies to invade
until every head is rent?

What shameful mockery
bids us to hold our faces high
without support?

We, who would preen on every breeze?
But left unblessed, we droop
and sigh instead.

There must have been some reason
to craft blooms which must be
staked or caged….

Or was it just a drunken bet
to see who would
prize so glaring a flaw?

Just caught this poem today, Barbara, as I am cleaning out my email box in anticipation of an onslaught of haiku emails as I take on a guest editorship for a month.

Peonies are such showy flowers; it’s a shame they have to be caged. Loved your poem. ~Nan

Thank you, Nan! They are beautiful flowers, but definitely require special handling. I never seem to be prepared with the stakes to support them. Maybe this year I’ll be ready. 😉

I’m looking forward to more of your marvelous Haikus!

Here’s one I wrote several years ago about the same kind of flower. I may have shared it in the past.

        their crinolines

I love this, Nan, how vivid the imagery is, the line of dancers, skirts in hands. How delightfully whimsical and perfect for such flashy blooms!

Thanks, Barbara. This is one of my favorite haiku I’ve written for all the reasons you’ve mentioned. As a result, I have combined the haiku with a photo of my peonies (actually called a haiga) into a birthday card I’ve sent to quite a few people.

It is a way to share haiku with people, and I know my friends and family won’t get another card like it.

Have you shared the photo on your blog? If so, which post? I’d love to see it!

Haven’t put the photo on my blog with the haiku on my blog. However, I might be able to post one.

        Barbara,

I posted it today at http://www.nbsmithblog.wordpress.com under A Haiga and a Bit More.

Even after all this time, I have difficulties putting photos on my site, but today, it went in easily. ~Nan
